Course Outline

Networking Technology is about designing and building computer networks and involves the physical installation and commissioning of networks and connection to the Internet. As a student, you will acquire the technical skills and knowledge necessary for a career in IT and computer networking.

Microsoft Windows – Microsoft Windows plays a crucial role in networking, as both a client and server operating system, and is a fundamental part of many network infrastructure solutions. Network engineers, whether working in traditional data centers or cloud environments like Azure, need to understand Windows networking concepts and technologies. 

 

Linux Operating Systems – a highly relevant and valuable for network engineers due to its widespread use in network infrastructure, automation tools, and increasingly, network devices themselves. Network engineers who understand Linux are better equipped for managing servers, monitoring network traffic, troubleshooting, and leveraging automation and orchestration tools.

 

Mac OS –  a key player in networking, especially in environments that include Apple devices or require cross-platform compatibility. As both a client and a server-capable operating system, it supports modern networking protocols, secure connections, and integration with services like LDAP and Active Directory. Its UNIX-based architecture provides powerful command-line tools for diagnostics and management, making it well-suited for IT professionals working in enterprise, hybrid, or cloud-based environments. Understanding macOS networking features is essential for ensuring seamless connectivity and interoperability across diverse systems.

Key topics include modern computer architecture, system memory, and motherboard functionality. Students will work with current storage technologies, such as solid-state and hard disk drives, and become familiar with modern data transfer interfaces. Instruction also covers system firmware, including setup and configuration of initialization software, hardware-level security features, and startup routines.

Students will learn how to install and configure a range of internal and external components, including graphics units, display screens, multifunctional peripheral devices, and various types of input/output ports. Emphasis is placed on system assembly, effective thermal management, and responsible upgrade practices, with attention to sustainability and the proper handling of obsolete or damaged components.

The course also includes installation and configuration of networking hardware, both wired and wireless, with an introduction to current communication protocols and diagnostic tools. Students will practice using troubleshooting software and hardware tools to diagnose issues, analyze system performance, and carry out repairs. By the end of the course, learners will be equipped with the skills needed to build, maintain, and support modern computing systems in a variety of technical environments.

This course teaches students to identify the components and types of networks, as well as the different media used in Local Area Networks and Wide Area Networks. Topics to be covered are as follows: identify and differentiate among Networking standards, protocols and access methods and recognize primary networks and architectures. 

Additional topics to be covered are as follows: Network Components; Network Architecture; Network Standards; Network Topologies; Different types of Network Cables and their use; Network Protocols; Elements of Network Connectivity; Introduction to Client/Server and Peer-to-Peer Network; Designing and Installing a Network; Ensuring Network Security; Administration and Troubleshooting a Network; Project.

A network engineer working with Microsoft servers needs a strong understanding of core networking principles, as well as specific knowledge of Microsoft networking technologies like Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, and Windows Server networking services

Microsoft Azure is a cloud platform that offers networking services, and an Azure Network Engineer is a professional who designs, implements, and manages those networking solutions. They are responsible for ensuring optimal performance, resiliency, scalability, and security of Azure networking infrastructure, including virtual networks, subnets, and other network components.
